“Relentless,” Lauryn said, “You have to pick: are you going to be relentless or are you going to be good? That’s the decision you have to make if you want to be great and get extraordinary results.”
All the free courses in the world tell you that you need to be consistent… but, relentless?
That’s not a word I had heard often since I started blogging, and I LOVE IT – much like all the other juicy pieces of advice Lauryn Evarts, founder of The Skinny Confidential, dropped when we spoke last.
With over half a million followers on Instagram and a perfect 5-star rating on iTunes for The Skinny Confidential: Him & Her Podcast, it’s clear that Lauryn Evarts has cultivated an army of badass women across the globe.
It isn’t surprising to see her rockin’ Louboutins at the top of the blogging atmosphere, this girl slays at connecting with her audience.
While her and husband Michael Bosstick are experts at keepin’ it real and laying it all out in the podcast, I had to get the inside scoop.
How, in this crazy noisy world, can we attract a crowd AND develop and establish relationships based on true connection?
I’m getting ahead of myself here – as you can tell, I was VERY excited to have a chance to steal a page out of her book.
Here’s The Skinny:
Lauryn founded The Skinny Confidential seven years ago. Yes, that means before influencers were really becoming a thing. In fact, she didn’t go into this with the intention of becoming a celebrity or making money. She simply wanted to help women like her.
“I never want to put out the feeling that I’m up here and you’re down there – that’s just not me. I’ve been so broke with absolutely no money. I’ve worked four jobs and still had to move back in with my godparents.”
Seven days a week and seven years later, she is now a published author with a highly successful podcast, website, and, my favorite, a female-only Facebook group where women can collaborate, uplift, and empower each other on love, wellness, beauty, and career.
When your intentions are pure, the right people will come.
There was never an overnight shift where her fairy godmother visited her in the middle of the night and granted her all her wishes.
Nope, Lauryn has worked her ass off since day one. “Tiny steps create big results,” Lauryn said in between me fangirling on the other side of the phone.
OK, maybe I wasn’t fangirling, but that’s only because Lauryn is so easy to talk to. When I went into the interview with the idea of connection and engagement, I didn’t realize that e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g she is online is who she is in person.
An honest intention is a major part of what it takes to cultivate connection.
In this overcrowded world filled with distraction and carbon copies, Lauryn is unapologetically herself and encourages her tribe of goddesses to do the same. Her passion for helping and uplifting others seeps through the computer and into the souls of everyone that she encounters.
“I want people to leave The Skinny Confidential site with a feeling that they can be the best version of themselves.”
Whether you’re a blogger, a vlogger, a writer, or a photographer – hell, you don’t have to be any of those things – Lauryn’s advice is to look for intimate ways to connect with people, get out there and START and be consistent.
We get so caught up in the approval of others or the fear of being rejected that we often forget to even get going.
“You have to get really uncomfortable to get comfortable.”
While Lauryn’s online presence may look flawless, what you see through photos, podcasts, and blogs is hours of hard work, a sprinkle of uncomfortableness, and a splash of rosé.
Her motivation and drive is something that we all have inside of us – it’s just whether or not you are willing to unlock it.
“You are in charge of creating your own future. You have all the tools in your toolbox and you can do it. You can do it in a way that is really true to yourself. You don’t have to apologize and you certainly don’t have to be everyone’s cup of tea.”
The point is, don’t get discouraged if you haven’t got the whole connection thing down yet. Nothing happens overnight and the more you practice your craft, the easier it will get.
The more comfortable you will feel with being outside your comfort zone…
And, if you’re struggling to even dance along the lines of your comfort zone?
Maybe you’re looking in the wrong place. Tap into a space that gives you goosebumps or sends shivers down your spine.
It’ll build character.
Remember, in order to truly connect with people, you need to be willing to take that first step. You need to recognize that 99% of people are feeling the same as you are, but very small percentage of those people are actually going to take action and step into their power.
Just like riding a bike, putting yourself out there is terrifying at first but once you do things get really groovy. It won’t be butterflies and mimosas 24/7 (I wish), but it will be worth it in the end.
“In the digital age, there are so many options to put yourself out there. If you work it, magic will happen. It gets tiring and there will be many times when you want to give up, but keep moving forward, be consistent, and be relentless.
Feeling inspired yet? I know I am – I turned off ogling over Ryan Gosling in La La Land because I had to get these words out onto the screen!
