Six months into my consistent yoga practice I was attending 3-4 classes a week. It was at that point I hit a physical plateau. My strength, flexibility, and curiosity of each posture leveled out and I found myself going through the motions. I was able to guess what posture would come next which left me easily distracted and desperately wanting to find something to humble and teach my body something new. Then I found Kerri Verna, you may know her as Beach Yoga Girl, and her month long yoga challenge called The Heart of Practice.
I had never heard of a yoga challenge before and the idea of taking a photo each day in a new pose excited me. It was totally unconventional, but with my digital marketing background and love of photography, I had to give it a try. There were so many elements of planning. I knew I wanted each photo to be in a unique location, I knew I would need to learn new postures I had never tried before, and I knew I’d be committing to practice every day. Bring it on!
Finding Kerri’s yoga challenge was a pivotal moment in my yoga practice and career. It was exactly that – a challenge that empowered me to dive further into my practice and fully devote myself. A year later and I am excited to be teaming up with two incredible yoga teachers and out-of-this-world sponsors to bring you my first yoga challenge: Courageous Yogi.
Courageous Yogi is for the new yogi, the seasoned bendy girl, and all that falls in between. From April 23-30th, 2017, we are devoting our days to sharing our stories of courage and how yoga has given us the strength and bravery to face the world. Working in poses that open the Solar Plexus Chakra, your confidence center, you’ll have the tools and guidance to deepen your practice and develop courage while being surrounded by a community of supportive like-minded individuals.
A yoga challenge is an entirely different approach to deepening your practice than, say, enlisting in a 200-hr yoga teacher training or something of that sort. While it may be unconventional, there are so many benefits to joining a challenge. Here are my three favorites:
You Win Stuff!
If you join the challenge and post a photo in the new pose every day from April 23-30, you may win something from one of our sponsors. We all know yoga gear is expensive and this is the perfect way to get your hands on some rockin’ accessories from leading brands including Goddess Provisions and Zen and Soul.
Get To Know Your Body
A challenge is a perfect way to get to know the ins and outs of your body. Some poses you’ll never have tried before and that is great! We want to introduce you to postures, old and new, in a different way so you can incorporate them into your practice moving forward and learn something new about your body. For example, I never knew I could do the splits until I tried in my first yoga challenge!
Meet New People
We’ve all seen the dark side of the Internet, but have you seen the light? Yoga challenges bring out the kindest and thoughtful human beings all ready to support you and your practice. I’ve met some of my closest friends and business partners through yoga challenges and it’s safe to say Kicking Asana wouldn’t be what it is today without them.
Yoga has always presented me with opportunities to get out into the world and share my message. While I was once fearful of the rejection of others, practicing yoga has helped me to cultivate trust in myself and in turn courage to share myself and my ideas. Yoga has made me comfortable in my own skin and by joining our challenge I hope it does the same for you.
Stay tuned by following me on Instagram @Kicking.Asana for more details on the challenge, the prizes, and our stories of courage.
